Tap Tempo: Find BPM Fast (Then Loop the Song)
Tap tempo turns a pulse into a number. A few clean taps beat guessing. Get the BPM on the metronome (or on the YouTube track in Studio), then loop the real song at that tempo — pitch stays true.
Loop a YouTube song at this BPM — Tap a stable BPM, then paste the YouTube URL in Studio at that tempo.
What tap tempo actually measures
You tap on the beat. The tool measures the time between taps and converts that interval into beats per minute.
Formula (rolling average): BPM = 60,000 / avg_interval_ms, where avg_interval_ms is the average milliseconds between consecutive taps.
A stable average from a handful of clean taps beats twenty sloppy ones.
Path A — tap on the standalone metronome
- Open the metronome. Go to metronome.riffloopstudio.com.
- Tap along. Tap with the pulse in your head (or a reference) until the BPM settles.
- Note the number. That’s your practice tempo for today.
- Optional speed trainer. Run the speed trainer from that BPM if you need stepped increases.
Path B — tap on a YouTube song in Studio
For the full Studio-first flow, see Find the BPM of a YouTube Song.
- Paste the YouTube URL. Open riffloopstudio.com and drop the track in the top bar.
- Tap tempo. Tap along with the recording until the number settles.
- Align Bar 1. Put Bar 1 on the first downbeat so the grid matches the song.
- Loop A/B. Mark the hard phrase and leave Loop on.
Bridge — spend the BPM on the song
- Open RiffLoop Studio. Paste the YouTube URL.
- Set the tapped BPM. Use the number from the metronome or Studio tap.
- Set Start (A) and End (B). Loop the hard bars.
- Slow only if needed. Pitch stays true. Raise speed in small steps.

Tap tempo vs speed trainer vs find-BPM
| Job | Page / tool |
|---|---|
| Pure tap → number (click only) | This page + metronome.riffloopstudio.com |
| Stepped tempo building | /metronome-speed-trainer |
| Track already open — get BPM then loop | /find-bpm-of-youtube-song |
| Handoff language metronome → Studio | /apply-metronome-tempo-to-youtube-song |
Dual path: Metronome = tap tempo, speed trainer, click-only drills. Studio = YouTube bar looper. Get the number. Then loop the song.
Quick recipe

- Open Studio, paste the YouTube song.
- Set that BPM, align Bar 1.
- Loop the hard bars. CTA: Loop a YouTube song at this BPM.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does tap tempo calculate BPM?
It averages the milliseconds between your taps and converts with BPM = 60,000 / avg_interval_ms.
Should I tap on the metronome or in Studio?
Metronome for click-only work. Studio when the source is a YouTube track you’ll practice — so the grid and the song share one clock.
How many taps do I need?
A few clean taps. If the number keeps swinging, slow down and tap only strong beats.
What do I do after I have the BPM?
Open Studio, paste the YouTube URL, set that BPM, and loop the hard bars. CTA: Loop a YouTube song at this BPM.
Is this the same as the speed trainer?
No. Tap tempo finds a number. The speed trainer steps that number up. Use both when you need find → build → song.
